3-Phase ERD Battery Backup Chart (SMF Lead Acid)

Ah required per backup duration for each ERD KVA rating. These are the minimum Ah values — actual battery count = Ah ÷ battery size × number of strings in series.

SMF Battery De-Rating Factors

Lead acid (SMF) batteries cannot deliver their full rated Ah at high discharge rates. Apply these de-rating factors when calculating Ah for short backup durations.

Backup DurationDe-Rating FactorEffective Ah = Rated Ah ×Example: 100Ah SMF delivers
15 min0.450.4545 Ah usable
30 min0.520.5252 Ah usable
1 hour0.620.6262 Ah usable
2 hours0.740.7474 Ah usable
3 hours0.80.880 Ah usable
4 hours0.830.8383 Ah usable
6 hours0.860.8686 Ah usable
8 hours0.880.8888 Ah usable
Lithium LiFePO4 note: Lithium batteries have a flat discharge curve and ~85% usable DoD at any discharge rate. Multiply SMF Ah values by 0.50 to get equivalent Lithium Ah requirement. Example: SMF needs 88 Ah at 1 hour → Lithium needs only ~44 Ah.

How to Calculate Total Battery Count

1
Series string = Bank Voltage ÷ 12V
e.g. 360V bank = 30 batteries in series (30 × 12V)
2
Strings needed = Required Ah ÷ Battery Ah rating
e.g. 88 Ah needed, using 100Ah batteries = 1 string (88 ÷ 100 = 0.88, round up to 1)
3
Total batteries = Series × Strings
e.g. 30 series × 1 string = 30 batteries total
4
For longer backup, add parallel strings
e.g. Need 200 Ah with 100Ah batteries: 2 strings → 30 × 2 = 60 batteries total
